About Stephan

Stephan Hoglund grew up on the hard rock hills of the Laurentian Divide, where waters part on northern Minnesota's Iron Range. After moving to Grand Marais on the north shore of Lake Superior and running a Mainstreet Jewelry Design studio and Gallery from 1980 to 2016 it was time for warmer climates! Now he and his Life Partner Susan live in the desert mountains near Silver City New Mexico traveling north in kinder months.

To explain his work one must say he is very much a regionalist. The work comes from a sense of place or shall we say places. Northern Minnesota is where it first began and now the open High Mesa and High Desert of Southwest New Mexico near Silver City. These places not only have been the source of the materials in much of the work, but also seem to sustain a creative and spiritual roadmap. The shores of Lake Superior has been a major source of surface found Lake Superior Agate, Isle Royal Greenstone or Chlorastrolite and the the amazing and rare Lake Superior Thomsonite. It has been said It is if he was chosen to be a messenger for these Gems. Over the years he has collected, arguably the most extensive collection of Lake Superior Gemstones in the world, enough to share with you for the rest of his life. Lake Superior Gemstones and the many varieties of Turquoise and Variscite of the Southwest are some of the most valuable surface found gemstones in the world and are naturally the most  environmentally sustainable and green gemstones in the world. For a true Minnesota Lake Superior Region or South West New Mexico treasure see his work and decide for yourself!

Stephan is one of the better known Minnesota Art Jewelers and was awarded a McKnight Fellowship for his Art Jewelry featuring the rare surface found Lake Superior Gemstones of this region. He had maintained a Art Gallery studio since 1980 before heading to the warmer climes of the dry warm SW New Mexico Mtns and desert borderlands. He creates Art and Studio Jewelry as well as wedding rings from Isle Royale Greenstone (Chlorastrolite) that depict his Boreal and Desert Environment. He also works with traditional stones such as Diamond Sapphire and Ruby.
